The Most Ancient of Days: the Holy Trinity

We celebrate today the mystery of the Blessed Trinity: One God in Three Persons. This is one of the fundamental mysteries that distinguish Christianity from other religions. Though the word "Trinity" cannot be found in the Bible, the revelation of God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit is uncontestably present in the Bible.

Thus, the first reading invites us to profess our faith in the One and True God: “The Lord is God in the heavens above and on earth below, and there is no other”. Indeed, the God we serve is Unique, Supreme and beyond all human understanding. Though majestic and Almighty above all, he is so close to his people. We cannot but recognize that there is no other god like our God (Deut. 4:32-34.39-40).

In the gospel, the Risen Jesus sends his disciples to evangelize all nations, “baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”. These words undoubtedly remind us of our baptism, through with we were born again into the community of the Holy Trinity, a community of love. In baptism, we received the Spirit of adoption, through whom we cry: “Abba, Father!” We are therefore sons and daughters of God, coheirs with Jesus Christ, and led by the Spirit of God (Rom. 8:14-17).

Thus, our Christian life is unseparable from the mystery of the Holy Trinity: we begin our Christian life "in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit". The Risen Jesus has promised us his unfailing presence till the end of the ages. And the last thing the priest will do at our graveside is to make the sign of the cross over our body.

In this perspective, the mystery of the Trinity is not an idea, or a simple dogma. It is the mystery that identifies us. Therefore, as we celebrate the Holy Trinity, let us ask the Lord to open our hearts to this great mystery of love, and grant us the grace to live as his true sons and daughters. By the way of our life, may we manifest to all his love, compassion and closeness. May he bless and keep all of us. Amen.
